About My Work

Thanks to a harrowing two-decade battle with trauma and other mental health struggles, I was thrust into the world of health and wellness – my life depended on it. The personal quest for well-being led to quite a circuitous and colorful professional journey. This included earning a PhD in organization development & behavior, studying with Shamans in foreign countries, learning cross and multi-cultural approaches to healing, journeying through faraway mystical lands, and researching a vast array of experiential and alternative health modalities. The result?

A dynamic, versatile professional background informed by extensive lived experience and valuable expertise. Whether it is my writing, public speaking, consulting, or transformational experiences, all my work is grounded in following three precepts: the fundamental importance of developing a healthy lifestyle; a deep appreciation for experiential learning; and the dire need for alternative, expansive, and imaginative individualized solutions. All of my work is infused with powerful anecdotes, practical knowledge, and an unrivaled passion to educate, empower, and inspire others in their quest for well-being.

I Wanna Get High

An Existential Approach to Overcoming Addiction

Addiction destroys lives, bringing with it astronomical costs of all kinds. Despite this, we still lack in substantive solutions. Big time. Drawing on unrivaled lived experience as well as extensive professional expertise, Wilson takes the reader on an impassioned exploration of the existential underpinnings of addiction. As he suggests, addiction is the product of a deeply dysfunctional relationship with oneself that becomes a true existential crisis; and the only antidote for overcoming it is by learning to love radically, fully, and unconditionally. Whether you are a person still struggling, a parent or loved one, or a professional in the field, Wilson provides keen insights, valuable wisdom, and practical guidance for all those intimately involved with addiction. Departing from the dominant discourse, I Wanna Get High offers us all a refreshing opportunity to think critically and expansively about how we approach addiction and how we all may transcend it altogether.

I Wanna Be Free

A Practical Guide for Cultivating Lasting Well-being

In his first book I Wanna Get High: An Existential Approach to Overcoming Addiction, Wilson suggested that a person’s addictive pattern is the product of a deeply dysfunctional relationship with oneself. This leads to an existential crisis and thus a problem in desperate search of a solution. In this book, we are presented with that solution – a self-management manual that supports the reader in becoming a steward of their own existence. Through a systematic approach informed his extensive personal and professional experience, Wilson provides sensible insights, invaluable wisdom, and practical exercises that enable readers to take control of their health and overhaul their lives. In doing so, not only will one heal trauma and disrupt their addiction, but they will begin to create a life that they absolutely love! I Wanna Be Free provides an empowering and emancipating opportunity for all those looking to overcome those obstacles that prevent lasting well-being.

FAQ

What is the Overall Goal of Your Work?
While I really hope to influence and impact each person differently, at the end of the day I want to help people experience love, freedom, and bliss. What else could one want!?
What Are Your Core Values & Beliefs?
I believe that love is the antidote to most of our current problems. Our world really needs more people to lead with sincere curiosity, compassion, and open mindedness. We must really value relationships of all kinds – those with ourselves, others, and the natural world – if we wish to reduce unnecessary sickness and suffering. For me, the basis of love and of healthy relationships are grounded in genuine acceptance, respect, integrity, and care.

At the same time, we live in a truly absurd, rapidly changing, and thus undeniably disorienting world. We are also only here for a very short time (YOLO!?). For these reasons, it is absolutely vital that we follow our bliss and embrace our authentic selves, as well as be sure to regularly find the humor in all of the chaos and crazy. This requires that, at all costs, we pursue our passions and have a hell of a lot of fun along the way…more play, less work!

Is There a Philosophical Approach that Guides Your Work?
Kind of, but not really…it’s always changing! My philosophy is quite pragmatic and really all about never remaining static or committed to a specific philosophy. If I were pressed to identify a philosophical approach it would be to take all the insights, lessons, and impressions that deeply resonate with oneself and then weave them into an always blossoming and continuously unfolding story. Said differently, do whatever the hell works for you and forget the rest! (as long as you don’t intentionally hurt others along the way).
How is Your Work Different? What Makes it Unique?
I like to think of my work as being far more empowering, far more liberating, and thus far less limiting that most. This is because I am passionate about utilizing alternative, critical, and expansive approaches. I have little patience for dominant discourses or those that are wed to limiting, disempowering models and approaches. I am not afraid to think or be different. At all.

My life and survival depended on me extricating myself from narrow minded, unimaginative, archaic approaches. The cookie-cutter, conventional solutions kept me sick. I’ve learned that nearly anything and everything may be a viable solution for one or many. Thus, we must expand the realm of possibility through true individualization, limitless imagination, and unbounded creativity. This means that at times my work may be radical to some, which is quite the compliment! As Shell Silverstein so brilliantly advised:

“Listen to the mustn’ts, child. Listen to the don’ts. Listen to the Shouldn’ts, the impossibles, the won’ts. Listen to the never haves, then listen close to me…anything can happen, child. Anything can be.”

Can Your Summarize the Essence of Your Writing, Speaking, and Coaching?
That’s a difficult one. Essentially, my work is all grounded in lived experience and founded upon the importance of experiential learning. I write, teach, coach, and/or speak about only those things that I have lived through. Ralph Waldo Emerson once said “Make your own bible. Select and collect all the words and sentences that in all of your readings have been to you like the blast of a trumpet.” So, in that spirit, the essence of my work is that it serves as “highlight reel” from my life, as well as the lives of all those I’ve encountered. My work contains all the most powerful and poignant wisdom garnered from living through extreme amounts of pain, trauma, and struggle.

Drawing upon decades of harrowing lived experience as well as years of professional expertise, Wilson takes us on an existential roller coaster ride that explores all the core components that constitute one’s addiction pattern. Along the way, he provides those still struggling, parents and loved ones, professionals, and providers with heartfelt advice, keen insights, and strategic guidance to help them along their journey. As Wilson convincingly illuminates, addiction is a crisis that we have collectively created, and for us to overcome it we must learn love fully, radically, and unconditionally.

I Wanna Get High seeks to provide a refreshing and much needed challenge to the conventional ways we think about, talk about, and treat addiction. It departs from the dominant discourse and aims to extricate us from traditional approaches by asking us to think critically and expansively about the “what is” and “how to” questions of addiction. As Wilson suggests, addiction is far more than faulty beliefs and maladaptive behavioral responses – it is an unhealthy way of being. Instead, at the core of an addictive pattern is a person in a severe existential crisis driven by a deeply dysfunctional relationship with oneself and questions of whether to live or die.

Addiction runs rampant throughout our society, destroying lives and bringing with it astronomical costs of all kinds. Despite the undeniable destruction that addiction causes, there exists a notable void of thoughtful and substantive solutions. The discourse remains entangled with, and dominated by, approaches that are deeply limiting, disempowering, and misleading. Cookie-cutter models such as AA and Abstinence prevail, despite overwhelmingly disappointing outcomes. We are in dire need of individualized, imaginative, and alternative solutions.
