Drawing upon decades of harrowing lived experience as well as years of professional expertise, Wilson takes us on an existential roller coaster ride that explores all the core components that constitute one’s addiction pattern. Along the way, he provides those still struggling, parents and loved ones, professionals, and providers with heartfelt advice, keen insights, and strategic guidance to help them along their journey. As Wilson convincingly illuminates, addiction is a crisis that we have collectively created, and for us to overcome it we must learn love fully, radically, and unconditionally.
I Wanna Get High seeks to provide a refreshing and much needed challenge to the conventional ways we think about, talk about, and treat addiction. It departs from the dominant discourse and aims to extricate us from traditional approaches by asking us to think critically and expansively about the “what is” and “how to” questions of addiction. As Wilson suggests, addiction is far more than faulty beliefs and maladaptive behavioral responses – it is an unhealthy way of being. Instead, at the core of an addictive pattern is a person in a severe existential crisis driven by a deeply dysfunctional relationship with oneself and questions of whether to live or die.
Addiction runs rampant throughout our society, destroying lives and bringing with it astronomical costs of all kinds. Despite the undeniable destruction that addiction causes, there exists a notable void of thoughtful and substantive solutions. The discourse remains entangled with, and dominated by, approaches that are deeply limiting, disempowering, and misleading. Cookie-cutter models such as AA and Abstinence prevail, despite overwhelmingly disappointing outcomes. We are in dire need of individualized, imaginative, and alternative solutions.
